Early cancer diagnosis, research and treatment have advanced exponentially in recent years, improving patient outcomes. As our understanding of cancer develops and treatments become increasingly sophisticated, there is a need to custom-prepare medication to meet the specific needs of the patient and their condition. This, in turn, demands increasingly sophisticated production facilities, both in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector and in hospital environments, where biopharma best practice can provide key learnings for safe, effective and energy-efficient drug preparation suites within the healthcare campus.
To conclude the 'Meet Our Design Team' campaign, we would like to present an interview with our BIM Manager, Mike Robinson. Mike is the focal point of development, implementation and monitoring of the use of BIM at BES. His primary responsibility is to manage and coordinate BIM standards on all related projects, files and models. He works closely with the Design Director and Principal Architect to help guide the implementation of BIM improvement strategy across the company and provides training to new staff, as well as updates our existing employees on the latest BIM protocols and procedures. In his interview, Mike explains what he finds exciting about his role and what aspect of his work is the most challenging at the moment.
Ours is a skill- and knowledge-based business so, although our design, engineering and construction teams are highly qualified, we are still investing heavily in training. However, most of our investment is dedicated to leadership and Personal Effectiveness with over 50% of our employees having now undergone our tailored leadership programme.
Medical research has achieved some extraordinary breakthroughs over the past few years and collaboration between clinicians, researchers and the pharmaceutical sector means that effective treatments are improving outcomes for patients faster than ever. The use of HPAPI (high potency active pharmaceutical ingredients), often highly toxic compounds that target unhealthy cells without damaging healthy cells, has become an area of huge potential for innovation.
As a continuation of the 'Meet our design team' campaign, we'd like to present a short interview with another key member of BES team, our Architecture Subject Matter Expert, Graham Pomfret. Graham has over 40 years experience in the construction industry, initially working for a number of architectural practices in the North West before moving into the pharmaceutical/healthcare sector over 25 years ago. He works closely with clients to develop and finalise the facility layout, material/personnel flows and finishes, and alongside the BES multi-disciplined design team through to construction to ensure that value management and quality assurance processes were applied to the project. Graham has an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical and healthcare facilities coupled with a strong technical background in construction.

Works are progressing well on the construction of the new 7,500m2 packing hall at our Macclesfield site. Following the demolition of existing warehouse racking, and removal of the existing slab, we have installed new foundations and slab to enable the construction of the mezzanine steel framed plant deck. The mezzanine floor slab has been poured in readiness for the delivery of Air Handling and Water Purification plant. Demonstrating flexibility and collaborative approach taken throughout the project, we completed this crucial phase in only 8 weeks.
Working in operational facilities, without affecting Business as Usual can be extremely challenging. BES are accustomed to working in these areas and bring a level of expertise that surpasses any others. Stakeholder liaison is key to ensure that the activities can be coordinated seamlessly with the ongoing operations. However, the prime objective is to segregate the areas to ensure that Operator safety, environmental conditions and cleanliness are maintained within the operational areas.
